We sang this Sunday for the first time at our church. As a worship pastor for many many years, it troubled me for two reasons: not one mention of the name of Jesus, God, Lord, and yes, "till you and I are one". As always, I dug into Scripture before I cross something off my list and I, too, followed your path and you gave us even more to think of; HOWEVER--yep, here it comes, we live in a heavy Mormon area and the Mormon mantra is well know, "As God is man will be" so unless the congregation gets educated first about the song it can leave you wondering...and we are a huge outreach church and many were wondering! The other feedback received was the very evident missing names of our Lord. 'You' could pertain to a lover! One young man in our congregation spoke with me later; he has come out of drugs and I don't think he has a place on his body that isn't tatooed - much to his chagrin now. He really wrestled with the song because it seemed irreverent to him (he didn't even pick up on the theology); he also said parts of it were something he'd say to a girlfriend!

In the end, I think songs like these have purpose but NOT without some teaching, especially in an outreach church. It harkens me back to the old Amy Grant days "i got the Joy, Joy, Joy" - no mention of God--heck my neighbor won a small amount of $$ at a lottery-he had joy...we know Christian joy is different, but to the newcomer who walks in seeking something, I would err on the side of NAMING that something as Jesus Christ my Lord.

Thanks for the theological background - it really helps.

I do a lot of outreach to New Age people who want to be "one" with the Universe and when I heard the lyrics for the first time I really had a hard time with it. It also reminded of the Buddhists who want to enter Nirvana and be one with their surrounding. So, hearing a worship song that talks about "oneness with God" is kind of hard to take for me.

But I understand the theological take of it. And I really like the song. Anyway, maybe someone can help me here...

It still makes me laugh. I love the look on Martin's face once he realizes that it was him.

Thanks for the plug for my blog!

Awesome background on the lyrics- really shows us the heart of god and how passionate He is about pursuing us. If only everyone in and outside the church could grasp this concept.

Brian, you have always been a great inspiration to me as a lead worshipper, and I frequently read your blogs and try to listen to "What's Up Worship" when I can find the time. I'm currently playing guitar for my church in Martinsville, and we're always looking for the most current, cutting edge songs for our worship experiences. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to post the set lists from Grace online to help give us some ideas. Thanks! -Greg
